How to Plant Zinnias

Posted on October 10, 2021

How to plant zinnias? This question is not always easy to answer. It can be very confusing with all of the different types available to buy at your local garden center. Zinnia blooms are gorgeous and the most pleasant blossom for any garden. If you are thinking about planting flowers in your garden, zinnias should be among your first choices. Read on to learn more on how to plant zinnias.

How to plant zinnias is similar to planting many other types of annual flower garden seeds. You need to purchase a good book or research online to find out what type you will be planting. Some varieties are easier to grow than others. Planting zinnias is not hard to do once you have everything in place. The nice thing about planting them as an annual flower garden is that you only have to replant them each year.

When you are planting seeds, the best time to plant them is spring through fall. If you live in a colder climate, you can also winterize the seeds by putting them into a plastic bag and placing them in a covered storage area. You will know when the last frost date is if you can see the snow starting to melt. When the first frost happens, you can dig the bag up and put the seeds back into the ground where they belong.

When you are ready to plant your zinnias, the best place to plant them is in a sunny and well-drained spot. You don’t want them in a low lying area because the roots will not get enough air and nutrients. Zinnias are low maintenance flowers that can thrive in most types of soil. They will do better in an area that receives a lot of sun. As long as it is well-drained and has good drainage, your zinnias should do fine.

One issue you should be aware of with your zinnia plant is powdery mildew. This fungus can destroy your new plant. If you notice spots of black spots on your flower buds or leaves, this is the fungi way of indicating the roots are already contaminated. You need to remove the infected plant right away before it starts to spread. Luckily, this fungus does not like many types of fertilizer.

How to plant zinnias: The growing stage for these plants is considered the growing stage. You do not cut the plant from the pot or dig it out of the ground. Make sure the roots of the plant are touching the support and the seeds are securely in place. This will help prevent the plant from spreading to other areas. Place the plant in a location that receives direct sunlight. Some people like to put their growing zinnia plants inside but I personally feel that they do better outdoors.

How to plant zinnias: Like most other varieties of flowers, zinnias are best planted from seed. Plant seeds indoors in small pots. There are various different varieties of seeds and you can find them in your local nursery. Once you have found the varieties that work best for you, place them into a small plastic bag and freeze until you are ready to plant.

How to plant zinnias: When you have found your desired variety of seeds, purchase a container that has a good amount of drainage. Keep the seed varieties separate from each other if you want your plants to grow. Once you have chosen the plants you would like to grow, place them in a hole or pot and gently press the soil closed over the plants. Water your plantings every few days until the flowers begin to bloom.
