How to Make a New Flower Garden – Choose the Best Flowers and Beds

Posted on September 5, 2021

How to Make a New Flower Garden is an excellent informational article for those that have just decided to commit to a new flower garden. Planting a flower garden can be a very satisfying activity but there are also many obstacles you will likely encounter along the way. This is especially true if you are planting flowers in a location that you have never before lived in. Flowers are beautiful plants that bring color to a location but there are also certain factors you should know in order to avoid problems. These issues will help you to have a more enjoyable experience and to avoid frustration as you plan for your new flower garden.

Shade: Shade is a very important part of gardening and knowing how to plant your flowers will ensure that they receive the proper amount of sunlight. Knowing the type of flowers you are growing will help you to determine where they will receive enough sunlight. If you are not familiar with which flowers need the sun the most, you should ask other gardeners you know who grow in your area. Most people will be happy to share their knowledge with you on this topic.

Climate: One of the biggest decisions you will make while planting your garden will be choosing what plants to grow and how large they will be. There are two different types of climates you should consider. Your first decision will be whether you would like to grow annuals or perennials. Annuals will live for one year only and perennials can survive for several years. Annuals can be planted in any season but perennials cannot.

Mulch: After you have decided the type of flowers, color scheme and climate you would like for your flower garden it is time to think about mulch. Most flower gardeners do not go out and purchase mulch. Most often mulch is purchased after the plant has been planted. It is important to remember mulch should be applied in the spring before the first frost. This will insure that it will not freeze and kill the plants.

Full Sun: Planting a flower garden in full sun requires careful planning. You want to place the flower garden so that it receives six hours of direct sunlight each day. If the flower garden were placed too far from the building you may not get enough full sun. Make sure that the flower garden receives the right amount of sun for healthy growing plants.

Tall Growing Plants: Larger bloom plants are great to use in a flower bed. These blooms will survive the winter months in a shaded area. Larger blooms do not need to be watered as often as shorter plants. If you are planting a flower bed in the fall, make sure to water these shorter blooms properly because they will not be as healthy when they are wet.

Shade: There are several ways to shade gardens and flowerbeds. The most traditional way to shade is with large plants. Shrubs, trees, large rocks and large pots can all be used as shading. Shrubs need to be watered rarely during the summer months; however they should still be watered well throughout the cooler months.

Perennials: How to Make a New Flower Garden with Perennials is pretty simple. Most perennials can be started from seed. If you choose to start a new plant from seeds then you will want to place the seeds in a shallow dish of water. The seeds need to be soaked until they are moistened. Place the seeds in a sunny location where they can get plenty of sun and good drainage. They should start to grow in a few weeks.
