Choosing the Best Plants and Flowers For Window Boxes

Posted on June 19, 2021

The best plants and flowers for window boxes should be determined first. It is best to choose the flowers that will complement your window, not compete with it. You can use the color of the flower, to determine its suitability to your place. For example, red denotes a tropical or warm climate while pink indicates that the flower garden is in the northern hemisphere. Aside from these, the flowers that come in shades of purple also work well. However, this does not mean that they are suitable to all places.

You will need to consider the climatic condition of the place where you will be growing the flower garden. Choose a flower with an intense color and blooms during the winter. On the other hand, choose the flowers that do not go yellow easily as these are used as accent flowers.

If the flower garden is not located near your windows, consider some interesting plants that will enhance your room. Consider adding a fern to your flower garden so that you can get an exotic look. It can also be grown alone if you prefer. This will definitely add more color to the area.

You can also buy ready-to-grow flowers or plants from a nursery. If you can afford such a store, it would be best. The best plants and flowers for window boxes should be durable and able to withstand frequent handling. They should also have attractive leaves that do not change quickly and do not become pale. These should be able to tolerate high temperatures as well.

Consider growing flowering plants such as clematis, orchids, sunflowers and violets in your place. Some can be grown in partial shade. Choose tall growing plants that can be seen at several different angles. Try planting them on a fence post with a stake in the center.

The best flower for windows can also serve as the focal point in your room. Consider planting lilies, daffodils, pansies and pretty roses in your windows. You may also place flowering bushes such as hollyhocks, buckeye, blueberry, cherry, red oak, purple basil and rue. Choose plants that have wide leaves so that they don’t need much care. They will definitely brighten up your windows.

Some flowers require more attention as compared to others. Roses and tulips for example need constant pruning to keep them growing healthily. You can prune these by cutting off their lower roots. If you want, you can also use fertilizers and growth stimulants to promote the growth of your flowers. If you have a large garden, then you can divide the flowers into sections and use them as planters.

There are a few things that you should consider when planning your plants and flowers for window boxes. Make sure that they are placed away from drafts and direct sunlight. Also, make sure that you do not plant too many plants near one another. Flowering plants should be arranged accordingly to ensure that you get the best view.

When it comes to mulch, do not use it on your plants. Mulch provides good insulation but it also blocks the flowers from absorbing its moisture. As such, leave it to the lawn or garden for use on your window boxes.

Planting grass or weeds in your flower garden is not advisable. Window plants need room to grow and thrive. These are also the same as houseplants. Make sure that the flower boxes you choose are suited for your window boxes.

For those who live in areas where there is limited space available for growing plants, there is still a way out. Window box plants can be potted and this can save you a lot of work in terms of space and time. Potted plants will require very little care and maintenance and as such they make great window boxes for apartments and small homes.

Your window box does not necessarily have to be a pot. It can be anything that fits the space you have. The important thing is to choose the best plant for it. You can have an arrangement or choose one of your favorite plants. Whichever you choose, you can be sure that your neighbors will surely notice your beautiful creation.
